In 2009 the USA Hockey National Team Development Program integrated the Hockey IntelliGym® with its U17 and U18 teams in the middle of the season. A total of 44 players used the IntelliGym that winter. As a result, the athletes improved their PPG (Points Per Game) by an average of 42% compared to the pre-IntelliGym stats while the team wins ratio more than doubled within the season. Since then, the various cohorts have won an unprecedented seven IIHF World Championships with a total of 28 medals over that span.
San Jose Sharks forward Matt Nieto uses The Hockey Intelligym to help ensure his game is at the highest level.
“At the NTDP, we were the first team to use this program. We used the IntelliGym a few sessions a week and I immediately began to notice improvements in my game. I was making smart, good, quick decisions on the ice. I’ll try anything if it helps improve my game and it certainly did. (The IntelliGym) has certainly helped me on the ice with making sharper, quicker decisions, especially with reading plays,” says the Long Beach, California, native, one of many NHLers that have used the Intelligym. “I have noticed an improvement in my game as a result of the program and look forward to progressing this year.”
The Minnetonka Skippers have been using the IntelliGym to improve the performance of their hockey team – and it’s working. The high school hockey team won the state championship last year and has continued their momentum into this season with an undefeated record. Keep up the good work boys!
Minnesota Hockey began implementing the Hockey IntelliGym across the CCM High-Performance Tier I League in 2017 after seeing the unprecedented success from the US NTDP.
“We’re excited about being able to provide IntelliGym to our Tier 1 League players this fall,” said Mike Terwilliger, new hockey programs manager for Minnesota Hockey. “Our league is about development and this fits in perfectly to develop our players’ mental side of the game. Between the skill-based on-ice practices our coaches provide, the Mayo Clinic Sports Medicine’s dryland and nutritional expertise, and the addition of Intelligym to develop critical thinking skills, we’re giving our players a development experience that’s second to none.”
Ellie Moser turned to the Hockey IntelliGym to help hone her hockey sense and become a better defensive player. Things turned around quickly after a disappointing started to the season. Moser ended the season as the team’s leading scorer and helped her team earn their first State Tournament appearance in 9 years. Read the full story here!
Robbie Stucker, prospect for the Columbus Blue Jackets, on how the IntelliGym helped him improve his game during his time with St. Thomas Academy. “I felt the IntelliGym really provided me with an up-top view of things. In particular, it helped me see opportunities to move the puck off the boards. Previously, I had a tendency to force passes.” Read his story on page 7 here.
After a disappointing finish in the 2012/13 season, the Ottawa 67s began to implement the Hockey IntelliGym into their training routine. The team saw improvements across the board and has not missed the playoffs since 2014. Check out this CBC News clip explaining how their players used the IntelliGym to improve their hockey sense!
What Pros and Coaches Say
Martin Höhener
Head Coach Swiss Men’s U17 National Team
“Hockey Sense is no longer an unconscious skill that is only trainable through actually playing the game. The Hockey IntelliGym gives our players the possibility to train their cognitive skills no matter where they are.”
Emily West
USA Hockey ADM manager for female hockey 2012 NCAA Division | Women’s Ice Hockey National Champion
“So much of our sport relies on Hockey IQ and recognition skills. The players who have hockey awareness and hockey sense set themselves apart from the others. The IntelliGym is a platform that players of all ages can use to develop those crucial mental skills and it’s another tool our players can use to become better hockey players between the ears.”
Shjon Podein
Stanley Cup Winner
“As a former NHL player and Stanley Cup recipient, I got to be on the ice with the best players in the game of hockey. I learned one main thing from being around these great hockey players and that was you must have a great mind to excel at the highest level. When I first took on coaching a Minnesota high school team, I wanted to provide the players with the best training possible and give them the extra edge that it takes to help win games. For this, I’ve implemented the Hockey IntelliGym into our regular training regimen. So far, our guys are completely into it and I personally know that the numbers on the ice will follow.”
Kurt Kleinendorst
Former U18 National Team Coach
“They started to make plays under pressure that I hadn’t seen prior to them using the IntelliGym.”
The Late Jim Johannson
Assistant Executive Director of Hockey Operations for USA Hockey
“We fully expect the Hockey IntelliGym to become part of the regular training regimen for players at all age levels and abilities.”
